The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is seeking public comments on a draft Environmental Assessment, or EA, for its proposed Lock and Dam 10 mooring cell project.

The purpose of the project is to construct a mooring cell for navigation vessels to tie off while awaiting passage through the lock on the Upper Mississippi River, upstream of Lock and Dam 10, near Guttenberg.

Art student excels as wildlife artist

Clayton Ridge senior Hailey Gaul, daughter of Tim and Kari Gaul of Guttenberg, has always been interested in art. As a young child, she loved to draw. In the fourth grade, she began taking art classes at the Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center. Hailey enjoyed the variety of art mediums and instruction she received at the after-school program. "It was a great place to experiment with painting, stained glass, and pottery," Hailey commented.

In early December, Clayton Ridge middle school student Gavin Dettbarn, son of Sean and Arlenea Dettbarn of Guttenberg, took the stage at the Elkader Opera House as part of the cast of the musical The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. 

The 12-year-old portrayed the tough, combative Claude Herdman alongside a cast of approximately 20 other actors.

For the past 12 years, veteran and Guttenberg Amvets member Jim Eglseder has been gifting refurbished farm tractors, implements, trucks, and miscellaneous toys to Shepherd of the Hills Christmas Just 4 Kids project in St. Olaf 

His hobby was ignited following a stop at a Communia garage sale in 2012 where he picked up a Tonka dump truck and cement truck that were in tough shape and needed some attention.

Council reviews budget timeline at monthly meeting

The Guttenberg city council reviewed a budget timeline, discussed a zoning request and set a public hearing for the SOO Green franchise ordinance at its monthly meeting on Dec. 9.

City Manager Jamie Blume presented the tentative budget timeline to the council. Budget planning began with a budget workshop in November and will end with a public hearing and budget adoption in April. The budget is due to the County Auditor by April 30.
