The MFL MarMac girls basketball team opened postseason play with a resounding 59-31 victory over Beckman Catholic in Class 2A - Region 5 action in Monona on Feb. 17.
The Trailblazers struggled to find the basket in the first quarter, falling behind the Bulldogs 13-3. MFL MarMac then ended the half on a 21-7 run, building a substantial 34-10 lead.
Although Beckman put more points on the board in the second half, they couldn’t catch the Bulldogs, who finished the night shooting 42.3 percent from the field, while the Trailblazers came in at 27.8.
MFL MarMac also had a solid 34 versus 20 rebounding advantage and snagged 17 steals. Beckman committed 21 turnovers overall, while the Bulldogs limited theirs to 13.
Freshman Blair Winter had team highs with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. She also grabbed a pair of steals.
Olivia Driscoll matched Winter’s 14 points—six of them coming on three-pointers. The freshman had two assists and a rebound as well.
Junior Emma Driscoll was also lethal from long range, hitting two three-pointers for six of her 12 points off the bench, and she pulled down five rebounds.
Junior Samantha Ruff’s stat line included eight points, seven steals, four rebounds, three assists and a block, while sophomore Evie Fritz added five points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Freshman Khloe Schutte chipped in four points, six rebounds and a steal off the bench.
The win set the Bulldogs up for a regional semifinal battle with Maquoketa Valley, who was 14th in the final Class 2A regular season rankings.
The Feb. 20 game was a close battle. MFL MarMac led 6-4 after one quarter, then the Wildcats knotted the score 17-17 by halftime. The Bulldogs took that lead back in the third quarter and continued to lead into the fourth, at 39-35, but struggled to muster points the rest of the night.
Olivia Driscoll hit a trio of free throws with just over two seconds remaining, pulling the team to within three points. The Bulldogs then forced a turnover and had a chance to tie the Wildcats, but a long three bounced off the rim.
Driscoll scored 15 points for MFL MarMac, followed by Ruff and senior Cora Keehner with eight points apiece.
The Bulldogs concluded the season with a record of 15-8.
