Four MFL MarMac wrestlers placed at the Upper Iowa Conference Tournament, held Jan. 31 at New Hampton.
That included a conference title for 126-pound Tacoma Thompson. The sophomore won his semifinal match by fall over Gavin Thuente of South Winneshiek before an injury default by Waukon’s Brock Stortz in the title bout secured the top spot for him.
Senior Will Howes finished third in the heavyweight bracket. He opened the tournament with a 2-0 decision over Alan Mejia of Postville, but was pinned late in the semifinals by Janesville’s Logan Lashbrook. Howes rebounded on the back side, winning both his consolation semifinal and third-place matches by fall.
Like Howes, junior Gavin Kishman started strong with a major decision win over Jose Lievano of Crestwood in the 150-pound quarterfinals. It was also his 100th career win. However, Kort Steffens of South Winn got the best of him in the semifinals via 11-8 decision. Kishman pulled out a sudden victory against Waukon’s Ryan Mathis in the consolation semis to advance to the third-place match, where he lost by major decision to Brady Frieden from North Fayette Valley.
Wrestling at 113 pounds, Parker Muras went 0-3 in his matches, but worked his way to sixth place on the podium.
Maddox Hanson finished 2-2 in his matches at 132 pounds, while Ben Kite (138 pounds), Anthony Bunting (157), Christian Escobar (165) and Tristan Hoopes (215) ended 0-2, and did not place at the tournament.
MFL MarMac finished the meet with 61 points, placing eighth of 12 teams. North Fayette Valley won the team title with 238 points, followed by South Winneshiek at 189.5 and New Hampton/Turkey Valley 187.
The Bulldogs will finish out their dual schedule at Central/Ed-Co on Feb. 3. Districts will be Saturday, Feb. 14, in Monona.
