The MFL MarMac boys basketball team went 1-1 last week, falling to South Winneshiek before scoring a victory at Clayton Ridge.
South Winn opened up a 24-6 lead over the Bulldogs in the opening quarter of the Jan. 27 game in Monona and never looked back, winning 90-55.
The Warriors shot an impressive 61.9 percent from the field and knocked down nine three-pointers. They also grabbed a whopping 73 boards to MFL MarMac’s 23. Fifty-eight were on the defensive end, giving the Bulldogs little room for second chance scoring.
Sixteen points and 11 assists gave MFL MarMac senior Carter Lightfoot a double-double. He also had an assist and a steal.
With 15 points and nine rebounds, Wesley Corlett neared a double-double as well. The senior led the team with four steals.
Senior Eli Hanson finished the game with 11 points and three rebounds, while senior Carsten Pester chipped in eight points—six of them from behind the arc—along with three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
MFL MarMac got back in the win column Jan. 30 at Clayton Ridge. After trailing 14-13 after the first quarter and 23-21 at halftime, the Bulldogs started the second half on a 22-14 run. They continued to pile on points in the final period, winning 69-53.
A large part of that offensive success was thanks to 10 three-pointers. Junior Tristan Bacon was responsible for half of them, and they made up 15 of his team-high 19 points.
The Bulldogs also rebounded well, besting Clayton Ridge 41-29 in that column. Corlett collected 19 of them and finished out the double-double with 13 points.
Lightfoot continued as an offensive threat with 17 points and six assists. He supported the defense with two rebounds and two steals. Hanson picked up 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
MFL MarMac is now 11-7 overall and 7-6 in Upper Iowa Conference action. The team will be on the road this week, at North Fayette Valley on Feb. 3 and New Hampton Feb. 6.
