The Central girls basketball team lost an Upper Iowa Conference match-up with Turkey Valley early last week, but rebounded with a dominant victory over Cedar Valley Christian.

Turkey Valley, ranked 11th in Class 1A, surged ahead 22-7 to start the Jan. 27 game in Elkader. Their scoring slowed as the game progressed, but the Warriors were unable to cut into the lead, losing 51-23.

The Trojan offense shot over 44 percent from the field and the defense supported the effort with 10 steals and limiting second-chance scoring opportunities for Central.

Layla Embretson put up a team-high six points for the Warriors, in addition to collecting three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Oakley Armstrong netted five points and a team-best three steals. She added three rebounds and two assists to her stat line.

Katie Royer contributed five points and a rebound, while Blair Scherf finished with two points and led Central with six rebounds.

It was a different story Jan. 30, as the Warriors cruised past winless Cedar Valley Christian 59-10. They kept the Huskies off the board the entire opening half while building a 44-point lead.

Central hit 30 percent of its shots and capitalized on an impressive 31 offensive rebounds. The defense was also relentless with 28 steals and two blocks.

A trio of Warriors hit double digits in scoring, including a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double for Scherf. The sophomore also had five steals and two assists.

Brylee Erickson led the team with 12 points, to go with three steals, an assist and a rebound, while Embretson picked up 10 points, seven rebounds, an assist and a block. Royer scored just two points, but was the steals leader, at 11, and finished with six rebounds and three assists.

Zoey Armstrong chipped in eight points and two steals off the bench.

Central—now 7-11 overall and 4-8 in Upper Iowa Conference play—will close out the regular season this week. The team hosted Kee on Feb. 3, before heading to Springville Feb. 5 and West Central Feb. 6.
