The Central boys basketball team netted two convincing Upper Iowa Conference victories over Postville and Clayton Ridge last week.
The Warriors jumped out to a 29-7 first quarter lead against the one-win Pirates on Jan. 20 and never looked back, winning 78-36. The team knocked down buckets at a 47 percent clip and was tough to defend from behind the arc, with 10 three-pointers.
Owen Hammersland hit one of those as part of his team-high 17 points. The junior also led Central with six assists and picked up four rebounds and two steals.
Senior Jake Hertrampf followed with 15 points, and grabbed seven rebounds, two steals and an assist. He was responsible for Central’s two blocks.
Senior Isaac Loan put up 11 points—nine of which came from three-point range—along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Fellow senior Carson Ruegnitz had a strong night off the bench with eight points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Warriors followed that up with a dominant 58-34 win at Clayton Ridge on Jan. 22. Despite hitting just seven three-pointers, the offense made over 43 percent of its shots overall and capitalized on 21 Eagle turnovers.
Hammersland and Hertrampf matched one another with 13 points and six rebounds apiece. Hammersland dished out a team-high five assists and swiped two steals, while Hertrampf grabbed one steal.
Isaac Loan added nine points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, while sophomore Mason Loan supported the offense with eight points and three assists. Defensively, he led the Warriors with seven steals.
The wins improved Central to 9-6 overall and kept the team atop the UIC small school division standings with a record of 8-4. This week, the Warriors will host Turkey Valley on Jan. 27, then Cedar Valley Christian on Jan. 30.
